Alif-Laaam-Raa; tilka Aayaatul Kitaabi wa Qur-aa-nim Mubeen

Alif. Lam. Ra. THESE ARE MESSAGES of revelation -of a discourse clear in itself and clearly showing the truth.

Rubamaa yawaddul lazeena kafaroo law kaanoo muslimeen

And it will come to pass that those who are [now] bent on denying this truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God [in their life time].

Zarhum yaakuloo wa tatamatta'oo wa yulhihimul amalu fasawfa ya'lamoon

Leave them alone; let them eat and enjoy themselves the while the hope [of vain delights] be guiles them: for in time they will come to know [the truth].

Wa maaa ahlaknaa min qaryatin illaa wa lahaa kitaabum ma'loom

And never have We destroyed any community [for its wrongdoing] unless a divine writ had (previously] been made known to it;

Maa tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahaa wa maa yastaakhiroon

[but remember that] no community can ever forestall [the end of] its term - and neither can they delay [it].

Wa qaaloo yaaa aiyuhal lazee nuzzila 'alaihiz Zikru innaka lamajnoon

And yet, they [who deny the truth] say: "O thou unto whom this reminder has [allegedly] been bestowed from on high: verily, thou art mad!

Law maa taateenaa bil malaaa'ikati in kunta minas saadiqeen

Why dost thou not bring before us angels, if thou art a man of truth?

Maa nunazzilul malaaa'i kata illaa bilhaqqi wa maa kaanooo izam munzareen

[Yet] We never send down angels otherwise than in accordance with the [demands of] truth; and [were the angels to appear now,] lo! they [who reject this divine writ] would have no further respite!

Innaa Nahnu nazalnaz Zikra wa Innaa lahoo lahaa fizoon

Behold, it is We Ourselves who have bestowed from on high, step by step, this reminder? and, behold, it is We who shall truly guard it [from all corruption].

Wa laqad arsalnaa min qablika fee shiya'il awwaleen

AND, INDEED, [O Prophet,] even before thy time did We send [Our apostles] unto communities of old -

Wa maa yaateehim mir Rasoolin illaa kaanoo bihee yastahzi'oon

and never yet came an apostle to them without their deriding him.

kazaalika naslukuhoo fee quloobil mujrimeen

Even so do We [now] cause this [scorn of Our message] to pervade the hearts of those who are lost in sin,

Laa yu'minoona bihee wa qad khalat sunnatul awwaleen

who do not believe in it, although the way which those [evildoers] of olden times had to go has long been within their ken.

Wa law fatahnaa 'alaihim baabam minas samaaa'i fazaloo feehi ya'rujoon

Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it,

Laqaaloo innamaa sukkirat absaarunaa bal nahnu qawmum mashooroon

they would surely have said, "It is only our eyes that are spellbound! Nay, we have been bewitched!,

Wa laqad ja'alnaa fissamaaa'i buroojanw wa zaiyannaahaa linnaazireen

AND, INDEED, We have set up in the heavens great constellations, and endowed them with beauty for all to behold;

Wa hafiznaahaa min kulli Shaitaanir rajeem

and We have made them secure against every satanic force accursed -

Illaa manis taraqas sam'a fa atba'ahoo shihaabum mubeen

so that anyone who seeks to learn [the unknowable] by stealth is pursued by a flame clear to see.

Wal arda madadnaahaa wa alqainaa feehaa rawaasiya wa ambatnaa feehaa min kulli shai'im mawzoon

And the earth -We have spread it out wide, and placed on it mountains firm, and caused [life] of every kind to grow on it in a balanced manner,

Wa ja'alnaa lakum feehaa ma'aayisha wa mal lastum lahoo biraaziqeen

and provided thereon means of livelihood for you [O men] as well as for all [living beings] whose sustenance does not depend on you.

Wa im min shai'in illaa 'indanaa khazaaa 'inuhoo wa maa nunazziluhooo illaa biqadarim ma'loom

For, no single thing exists that does not have its source with Us; and nought do We bestow from on high unless it be in accordance with a measure well-defined.

Wa arsalnar riyaaha la waaqiha fa anzalnaa minas samaaa'i maaa'an fa asqai naakumoohu wa maaa antum lahoo bikhaazineen

And We let loose the winds to fertilize [plants] and We send down water from the skies and let you drink thereof: and it is not you who dispose of its source-

Wa innnaa la nahnu nuhyee wa numeetu wa nahnul waarisoon

for, behold, it is We-We alone -who grant life and deal death, and it is We alone who shall remain after all else will have passed away!

Wa la qad 'alimnal mustaqdimeena minkum wa laqad 'alimnal mustaakhireen

And well do We know [the hearts and deeds of all human beings - both] those who lived before you and those who will come after you;

Wa inna Rabbaka Huwa yahshuruhum; innahoo Hakeem 'Aleem

and, behold, it is thy Sustainer who will gather them all together [on Judgment Day]: verily, He is wise, all-knowing!

Wa laqad khalaqnal insaana min salsaalim min hama im masnoon

AND, INDEED, We have created man out of sounding clay, out of dark-slime transmuted

Waljaaanna khalaqnaahu min qablu min naaris samoom

whereas the invisible beings We had created, [long] before that, out of the fire of scorching winds.

Wa iz qaala Rabbuka lilmalaaa' ikati innee khaaliqum basharam min salsaalim min hama im masnoon

And lo! Thy Sustainer said unto the angels: "Behold, I am about to create mortal man out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted;

Fa izaa sawwaituhoo wa nafakhtu feehi mir roohee faqa'oo lahoo saajideen

and when I have formed him fully and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down before him in prostration!

Fasajadal malaaa'ikatu kulluhum ajma'oon

Thereupon the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together,

Illaaa ibleesa abaaa ai yakoona ma'as saajideen

save Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves.

Qaala yaaa Ibleesu maa laka allaa takoona ma'as saajideen

Said He: "O Iblis! What is thy reason for not being among those who have prostrated themselves?"

Qaala lam akul li asjuda libasharin khalaqtahoo min salsaalim min hama im masnoon

[Iblis] replied: "It is not for me to prostrate myself before mortal man whom Thou hast created out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted!"

Qaala fakhruj minhaa fa innaka rajeem

Said He: "Go forth, then, from this [angelic state]: for, behold, thou art [henceforth] accursed,

Wa inna 'alikal la'nata ilaa Yawmid Deen

and [My] rejection shall be thy due until the Day of Judgment!"

Qaala Rabbi fa anzirneee ilaa Yawmi yub'asoon

Said [Iblis]: "Then, O my Sustainer, grant me a respite till the Day when all shall be raised from the dead!"

Qaala fa innaka minal munzareen

Answered He: "Verily, so be it: thou shalt be among those who are granted respite

Ilaa Yawmil waqtil ma'loom

till the Day the time whereof is known [to Me alone]."

Qaala Rabbi bimaaa aghwaitanee la uzayyinaana lahum fil ardi wa la ughwiyan nahum ajma'een

[Whereupon Iblis] said: "O my Sustainer! Since Thou hast thwarted me, I shall indeed make [all that is evil] on earth seem goodly to them, and shall most certainly beguile them-into grievous error -

Illaa 'ibaadaka minhumul mukhlaseen

[all] save such of them as are truly Thy servants!"

Qaala haaza Siraatun 'alaiya Mustaqeem

Said He: "This is, with Me. a straight way:

Inna 'ibaadee laisa laka 'alaihim sultaanun illaa manittaba'aka minal ghaaween

verily, thou shalt have no power over My creatures- unless it be such as are [already] lost in grievous error and follow thee [of their own will]:

Wa inna jahannama lamaw'iduhum ajma'een

and for all such, behold, hell is the promised goal.

Lahaa sab'atu abwaab; likulli baabim minhum juz'um maqsoom

with seven gates leading into it, each gate receiving its allotted share of sinners. -

Innal muttaqeena fee Jannaatinw wa 'uyoon

VERILY, those who are conscious of God [shall find themselves in the hereafter] amidst gardens and springs,

Udkhuloohaa bisalaamin aamineen

[having been received with the greeting,] "Enter here in peace, secure!"

Wa naza'naa ma fee sudoorihim min ghillin ikhwaanan 'alaa sururim mutaqaabileen

And [by then] We shall have removed whatever unworthy thoughts or feelings may have been [lingering] in their breasts, [and they shall rest] as brethren, facing one another [in love] upon thrones of happiness.

Laa yamas suhum feehaa nasabunw wa maa hum minhaa bimukhrajeen

No weariness shall ever touch them in this [state of bliss], and never shall they have to forgo it.

Nabbi' 'ibaadeee annneee anal Ghafoorur Raheem

Tell My servants that I - I alone - am truly forgiving, a true dispenser of grace;

Wa anna 'azaabee uwal 'azaabul aleem

and [also,] that the suffering which I shall impose [on sinners] will indeed be a suffering most grievous.

Wa nabbi'hum 'an daifi Ibraaheem

AND TELL THEM [once again] about Abraham's guests -

Iz dakhaloo 'alaihi faqaaloo salaaman qaala innaa minkum wajiloon

[how,] when they presented themselves before him and bade him peace, he answered: "Behold, we are afraid of you!"

Qaaloo la tawjal innaa nubashshiruka bighulaamin 'aleem

Said they: "Fear not! Behold, we bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son who will be endowed with deep knowledge."

Qaala abashshartumoonee 'alaaa am massaniyal kibaru fabima tubashshiroon

Said he: "Do you give me this glad tiding despite the fact that old age has overtaken me? Of what [strange thing], then, are you giving me a tiding!"

Qaaloo bashsharnaaka bilhaqqi falaa takum minal qaaniteen

They answered: "We have given thee the glad tiding of something that is bound to come true. - so be not of those who abandon hope!"

Qaala wa mai yaqnatu mir rahmati Rabbiheee illad daaaloon

[Abraham] exclaimed: "And who-other than those who have utterly lost their way-could ever abandon the hope of his Sustainer's grace?"

Qaala famaa khatbukum aiyuhal mursaloon

He added: "And what [else] may you have in view, O you [heavenly] messengers?"

Qaaloo innaaa ursilnaaa ilaa qawmim mujrimeen

They answered: "We are sent to people lost in sin [who are to be destroyed],

Illaaa Aala Loot; innaa lamunajjoohum ajma'een

barring Lot's household, all of whom, behold, we shall save -

Illam ra atahoo qaddarnaaa innahaa laminal ghaabireen

excepting only his wife, [of whom God says,] `We have ordained [that], behold, she should be among those who stay behind!'

Falamma jaaa'a Aala Lootinil mursaloon

AND WHEN the messengers [of God] came to the house of Lot,

Qaala innakum qawmum munkaroon

he said: "Behold, you are people unknown [here]!"

Qaaloo bal ji'naaka bimaa kaanoo feehi yamtaroon

They answered: "Nay, but we have come unto thee with [the announcement of] something that they [who are given to evil] have always been wont to call in question,

Wa atainaaka bilhaqqi wa innaa lasaadiqoon

and we are bringing thee the certainty [of its fulfilment]: for, behold, we are speaking the truth indeed.

Fa asri bi ahlika biqit'im minal laili wattabi' adbaarahum wa laa yaltafit minkum ahadunw wamdoo haisu tu'maroon

Go, then., with thy household while it is yet night, with thyself following them in the rear; and let none of you look back, but proceed whither you are bidden."

Wa qadainaaa ilaihi zaalikal amra anna daabira haaa'ulaaa'i maqtoo'um musbiheen

And [through Our messengers] We revealed unto him this decree: "The last remnant of those [sinners] shall be wiped out" in the morn."

Wa jaaa'a ahlul madeenati yastabshiroon

And the people of the city came [unto Lot], rejoicing at the glad tiding.

Qaala inna haaa'ulaaa'i daifee falaa tafdahoon

Exclaimed [Lot]: "Behold, these are my guests: so put me not to shame,

Wattaqul laaha wa laa tukhzoon

but be conscious of God and disgrace me not!"

Qaalooo awalam nanhaka 'anil 'aalameen

They answered: "Have we not forbidden thee [to offer protection] to any kind of people?"

Qaala haaa'ulaaa'i banaateee in kuntum faa'ileen

[Lot] said: "[Take instead] these daughters of mine, if you must do [whatever you intend to do]!"

La'amruka innahum lafee sakratihim ya'mahoon

[But the angels spoke thus:] "As thou livest, [O Lot, they will not listen to thee:] behold, in their delirium [of lust] they are but blindly stumbling to and fro!"

Fa akhazat humus saihatu mushriqeen

And thereupon the blast [of Our punishment] overtook them at the time of sunrise,

Faja'alnaa 'aaliyahaa saafilahaa wa amtamaa 'alaihim hijaaratam min sjijjeel

and We turned those [sinful towns} upside down, and rained down upon them stone-hard blows of chastisement pre-ordained.

Inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil lilmutawassimeen

Verily, in all this there are messages indeed for those who can read the signs:

Wa innahaa labi sabeelim muqeem

for, behold, those [towns] stood by a road that still exists.

Inna fee zaalika la Aayatal lilmu'mineen

Verily, herein lies a message indeed for all who believe [in God].

Wa in kaana Ashaabul Aikati lazaalimeen

AND THE DWELLERS of the wooded dales [of Madyan, too,] were inveterate evildoers,

Fantaqamnaa minhum wa innahumaa labi imaamim mubeen

and so We inflicted Our retribution on them. And, behold, both these [sinful communities] lived by a highway, [to this day] plain to see

Wa laqad kazzaba ashaabul Hijril mursaleen

AND, [likewise,] indeed, the people of Al-Hijr gave the lie to [Our] message-bearers:

Wa aatainaahum Aayaatinaa fakaanoo 'anhaa mu'rideen

for We did vouchsafe them Our messages, but they obstinately turned their backs upon them-

Wa kaanoo yanhitoona minal jibaali buyootan aamineen

notwithstanding that they had been wont [to enjoy Our blessings and] to hew out dwellings from the mountains, [wherein they could live] in security

Fa akhazat humus saihatu musbiheen

and so the blast [of Our punishment] overtook them at early morn,

Famaaa aghnaa 'anhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon

and of no avail to them was all [the power] that they had acquired.

Wa maa khalaqnas samaawaati wal arda wa maa bainahumaaa illaa bilhaqq; wa innas Saa'ata la aatiyatun fasfahis safhal jameel

AND [remember:] We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them without [an inner] truth; but, behold, the Hour [when this will become clear to all] is indeed yet to come. Hence, forgive [men's failings] with fair forbearance:

Inna Rabbaka Huwal khallaaqul 'aleem

verily, thy Sustainer is the all-knowing Creator of all things!

Wa laqad aatainaaka sab'am mnal masaanee wal Qur-aanal 'azeem

AND, INDEED, We have bestowed upon thee seven of the oft repeated [verses], and [have, thus, laid open before thee] this sublime Qur'an:

Laa tamuddanna 'ainaika ilaa maa matta 'naa biheee azwaajam minhum wa laa tahzan 'alaihim wakhfid janaahaka lilmu 'mineen

[so] turn, not thine eyes [longingly] towards the worldly benefits which We have granted unto some of those [that deny the truth]. And neither grieve over those [who refuse to heed thee], but spread the wings of thy tenderness over the believers,

Wa qul inneee anan nazeerul mubeen

and say: "Behold, I am indeed the plain warner [promised by God]!

Kamaaa anzalnaa 'alal muqtasimeen

[For, thou art the bearer of a divine writ] such as We have bestowed from on high upon those who [afterwards] broke it up into parts,

Allazeena ja'alul Quraana'ideen

[and] who [now] declare this Qur'an to be [a tissue of] falsehoods!

Fawa Rabbika lanas'a lannahum ajma'een

But, by thy Sustainer! [On the Day of Judgment] We shall indeed call them to account, one and all,

'Ammaa kaanoo ya'maloon

for whatever they have done!

Fasda' bimaa tu'maru wa a'rid anil mushrikeen

Hence, proclaim openly all that thou hast been bidden [to say], and leave alone all those who ascribe divinity to aught beside God:

Innaa kafainaakal mustahzi'een

verily, We shall suffice thee against all who [now] deride [this message - all]

Allazeena yaj'aloona ma'al laahi ilaahan aakhar; fasawfa ya'lamoon

who assert that there are, side by side with God, other divine powers as well: for in time they will come to know [the truth].

Wa laqad na'lamu annak yadeequ sadruka bimaa yaqooloon

And well do We know that thy bosom is constricted by the [blasphemous] things that they say:

Fasbbih bihamdi Rabbika wa kum minas saajideen

but extol thou thy Sustainer's limitless glory and praise Him, and be of those who prostrate themselves [before Him] in adoration,

Wa'bud Rabbaka hattaa yaatiyakal yaqeen

and worship thy Sustainer till death comes to thee.

Ataaa amrullaahi falaa tasta'jilooh; Subhaanahoo wa Ta'aalaa 'ammaa yushrikoon

GOD'S JUDGMENT is [bound to] come: do not, therefore, call for its speedy advent! Limitless is He in His glory and sublimely exalted above anything to which men may ascribe a share in His divinity!

Yunazzilul malaaa 'ikata birroohi min amrihee 'alaa mai yashaaa'u min 'ibaadiheee an anzirooo annahoo laaa ilaaha illaaa ana fattaqoon

He causes the angels to descend with this divine inspiration, [bestowed] at His behest upon whomever He wills of His servants: "Warn [all human beings] that there is no deity save Me: be, therefore, conscious of Me!"

Khalaqas samaawaati wal arda bilhaqq; Ta'aalaa 'ammaa yushrikoon

He has created the heavens and the earth in accordance with [an inner] truth; sublimely exalted is He above anything to which men may ascribe a share in His divinity!

Khalaqal insaana min nutfatin fa izaa huwa khaseemum mubeen

He creates man out of a [mere] drop of sperm: and lo! this same being shows himself endowed with the power to think and to argue!

Wal an 'amaa khalaqahaa; lakum feehaa dif'unw wa manaafi'u wa minhaa taakuloon

And He creates cattle: you derive warmth from them, and [various other] uses; and from them you obtain food;

Wa lakum feehaa jamaalun heena tureehoona wa heena tasrahoon

and you find beauty in them when you drive them home in the evenings and when you take them out to pasture in the mornings.

Wa tahmilu asqaalakum ilaa baladil lam takoonoo baaligheehi illaa bishiqqil anfus; inna Rabbakum la Ra'oofur Raheem

And they carry your loads to [many] a place which [otherwise] you would be unable to reach without great hardship to yourselves. Verily, your Sustainer is most compassionate, a dispenser of grace!

Walkhaila wal bighaala wal hameera litarkaboohaa wa zeenah; wa yakhluqu maa laa ta'lamoon

And (it is He who creates] horses and mules and asses for you to ride, as well as for [their] beauty: and He will yet create things of which [today] you have no knowledge.

Wa 'alal laahi qasdus sabeeli wa minhaa jaaa'ir; wa law shaaa'a lahadaakum ajma'een

And [because He is your Creator,] it rests with God alone to show you the right path: yet there is [many a one] who swerves from it. However, had He so willed, He would have guided you all aright.

Huwal lazeee anzala minas samaaa'i maaa'al lakum minhu sharaabunw wa minhu shajarun feehi tuseemoon

It is He who sends down water from the skies; you drink thereof, and thereof [drink] the plants upon which you pasture your beasts;

Yumbitu lakum bihiz zar'a wazzaitoona wanna kheela wal-a'naaba wa min kullis samaraat, inna fee zaalika la Aayatal liqawminy yatafakkaroon

[and] by virtue thereof He causes crops to grow for you, and olive trees, and date palms, and grapes, and all [other] kinds of fruit: in this, behold, there is a message indeed for people who think!

Wa sakkhkhara lakumul laila wannahaara wash shamsa walqamara wannujoomu musakhkharaatum bi amrih; inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil liqawminy ya'qiloon

And He has made the night and the day and the sun and the moon subservient [to His laws, so that they be of use] to you; and all the stars are subservient to His command: in this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who use their reason!

Wa maa zara a lakum fil ardi mukhtalifan alwaanuh; inna fee zaalika la Aayatal liqawminy yazakkaroon

And all the [beauty of] many hues-which He has created for you on earth: in this, behold, there is a message for people who (are willing to] take it to heart!

Wa Huwal lazee sakhkharal bahra litaakuloo minhu lahman tariyyanw wa tastakhrijoo minhu hilyatan talbasoonahaa wa taral fulka mawaakhira feehi wa litabtaghoo min fadlihee wa la'allakum tashkuroon

And He it is who has made the sea subservient [to His laws], so that you might eat fresh meat from it, and take from it gems which you may wear. And on that [very sea] one sees ships ploughing through the waves, so that you might [be able to] go forth in quest of some of His bounty, and thus have cause to be grateful [to Him].

Wa alqaa fil ardi rawaasiya an tameeda bikum wa anhaaranw wa sublulal la 'allakum tahtadoon

And he has placed firm mountains on earth, lest it sway with you, and rivers and paths, so that you might find your way,

Wa 'alaamaat; wa bin najmi hum yahtadoon

as well as [various other] means of orientation: for [it is] by the stars that men find their way.

Afamany yakhluqu kamallaa yakhluq; afalaa tazak karoon

IS, THEN, HE who creates comparable to any [being] that cannot create? Will you not, then, bethink yourselves?

Wa in ta'uddoo ni'matal laahi laa tuhsoohaa; innal laaha la Ghafoorur Raheem

For, should you try to count God's blessings, you could never compute them! Behold, God is indeed much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace;

Wallaahu ya'lamu maa tusirroona wa maa tu'linoon

and God knows all that you keep secret as well as all that you bring into the open.

Wallazeena yad'oona min doonil laahi laa yakhluqoona shai'anw wa hum yukhlaqoon

Now those beings that some people invoke beside God cannot create anything, since they themselves are but created:

Amwaatun ghairu ahyaaa'inw wa maa yash'uroona aiyaana yub'asoon

they are dead, not living, and they do not [even] know when they will be raised from the dead!

Illahukum Ilaahunw Waahid; fallazeena laa yu'minoona bil Aakhirati quloobuhum munkiratunw wa hum mustakbiroon

Your God is the One God: but because of their false pride, the hearts of those who do not believe in the life to come refuse to admit this [truth].

Laa jarama annal laaha ya'lamu maa yusirrona wa ma yu'linoon; innahoo laa yuhibbul mustakbireen

Truly, God knows all that they keep secret as well as all that they bring into the open -[and,] behold, He does not love those who are given to arrogance,

Wa izaa qeela lahum maazaaa anzala Rabbukum qaaloo asaateerul awwaleen

and [who], whenever they are asked, "What is it that your Sustainer has bestowed from on high?"-are wont to answer, "Fables of ancient times!"

Liyahmilooo awzaarahum kaamilatany Yawmal Qiyaamati wa min awzaaril lazeena yudilloonahum bighairi 'ilm; alaa saaa'a maa yaziroon

Hence, on Resurrection Day they shall bear the full weight of their own burdens, as well as some of the burdens of those ignorant ones whom they have led astray: oh, how evil the load with which they shall be burdened!

Qad makaral lazeena min qablihim fa atal laahu bunyaa nahum minal qawaa'idi fakharra 'alaihimus saqfu min fawqihim wa ataahumul 'azaabu min haisu laa yash'uroon

Those who lived before them did, too, devise many a blasphemy -whereupon God visited with destruction all that they had ever built, [striking] at its very foundations, so that the roof fell in upon them from above and suffering befell them without their having perceived whence it came.

Summa Yawmal Qiyaamati yukhzeehim wa yaqoolu aina shurakaaa'iyal lazeena kuntum tushaaaqqoona feehim; qaalal lazeena ootul 'ilma innal khizyal Yawma wassooo'a 'alal kaafireen

And then, on Resurrection Day, He will cover them [all] with ignominy, and will say: "Where, now, are those beings to whom you ascribed a share in My divinity, [and] for whose sake you cut yourselves off [from My guidance]?" [Whereupon] those who [in their lifetime] were endowed with knowledge will say: "Verily, ignominy and misery [have fallen] this day upon those who have been denying the truth-

Allazeena tatawaf faahu mul malaaa'ikatu zaalimeee anfusihim fa alqawus salama maa kunnaa na'malu min sooo'; balaaa innal laaha 'aleemum bimaa kuntum ta'maloon

those whom the angels have gathered in death while they were still sinning against themselves!" Then will they [who are thus arraigned] proffer their submission, [saying:] "We did not [mean to] do any evil! [But they will be answered:] "Yea, verily, God has full knowledge of all that you were doing!

Fadkhulooo abwaaba jahannama khaalideena feeha falabi'sa maswal mutakab bireen

Hence, enter the gates of hell, therein to abide!" And evil, indeed, shall be the state of all who are given to false pride!

Wa qeela lillazeenat taqaw maazaaa anzala Rabbukum; qaaloo khairaa; lillazeena absanoo fee haazihid dunyaa hasanah; wa la Daarul Aakhirati khair; wa lani'ma daarul muttaqeen

But [when] those who are conscious of God are asked, "What is it that your Sustainer has bestowed from on high?" -they answer, "Goodness supreme!" Good fortune awaits, in this world, all who persevere in doing good; but their ultimate state will be far better still: for, how excellent indeed will be the state of the God-conscious [in the life to come]!

Jannaatu 'Adniny yadkhuloonahaa tajree min tahtihal anhaaru lahum feehaa maa yashaaa'oon; kazaalika yajzil laahul muttaqeen

Gardens of perpetual bliss will they enter - [gardens] through which running waters flow - having therein all that they might desire. Thus will God reward those who are conscious of Him-

Allazeena tatawaf faahumul malaaa'ikatu taiyibeena yaqooloona salaamun 'alai kumud khulul Jannata bimaa kuntum ta'maloon

those whom the angels gather in death while they are in a state of inner purity, greeting them thus: "Peace be upon you! Enter paradise by virtue of what you were doing [in life]!"

Hal yanzuroona illaaa an taatiyahumul malaaa'ikatu aw yaatiya amru Rabbik; kazaalika fa'alal lazeena min qablihim; wa maa zalamahumul laahu wa laakin kaanoo anfusahum yazlimoon

ARE THEY [who deny the truth] but waiting for the angels to appear unto them, or for God's judgment to become manifest? Even thus did behave those [stubborn sinners] who lived before their time; and [when they were destroyed,] it was not God who wronged them, but it was they who had wronged themselves:

Fa asaabahum saiyi aatu maa 'amiloo wa haaqa bihim maa kaano bihee yastahzi'oon

for all the evil that they had done fell [back] upon them, and they were overwhelmed by the very thing which they had been wont to deride.

Wa qaalal lazeena ashrakoo law shaaa'al laahu ma 'abadnaa min doonihee min shai'in nahnu wa laaa aabaaa'unaa wa laa harramnaa min doonihee min shai'; kazaalika fa'alal lazeena min qablihim fahal 'alar Rusuli illal balaaghul mubeen

Now they who ascribe divinity to aught beside God say, "Had God so willed, we would not have worshipped aught but Him - neither we nor our forefathers; nor would we have declared aught as forbidden without a commandment from Him." Even thus did speak those [sinners] who lived before their time; but, then, are the apostles bound to do more than clearly deliver the message [entrusted to them]?

Wa laqad ba'asnaa fee kulli ummatir Rasoolan ani'budul laaha wajtanibut Taaghoota faminhum man hadal laahu wa minhum man haqqat 'alaihid dalaalah; faseeroo fil ardi fanzuroo kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul mukazzibeen

And indeed, within every community have We raised up an apostle [entrusted with this message]: "Worship God, and shun the powers of evil!" And among those [past generations] were people whom God graced with His guidance, just as there was among them [many a one] who inevitably fell prey to grievous error: go, then, about the earth and behold what happened in the end to those who gave the lie to the truth!

In tahris 'alaa hudaahum fa innal laaha laa yahdee mai yudillu wa maa lahum min naasireen

[As for those who are bent on denying the truth-] though thou be ever so eager to show them the right way, [know that,] verily, God does not bestow His guidance upon any whom He judges to have gone astray; and such shall have none to succour them [on Resurrection Day].

Wa aqsamoo billaahi jahda aimaanihim laa yab'asul laahu mai yamoot; balaa wa'dan 'alaihi haqqanw wa laakinna aksaran naasi laa ya'lamoon

As it is, they swear by God with their most solemn oaths, "Never will God raise from the dead anyone who has died!" Yea indeed! [This very thing has God promised] by a promise which He has willed upon Himself; but most people know it not.

Liyubaiyina lahumul lazee yakhtalifoona feehi wa liya'lamal lazeena kafarooo annahum kaanoo kaazibeen

[He will resurrect them] to the end that He might make clear unto them all whereon they [now] hold divergent views, and that they who are bent on denying the truth [of resurrection] might come to know that they were liars.

Innamaa qawlunaa lisha y'in izaa aradnaahu an naqoola lahoo kun fa yakoon

Whenever We will anything to be, We but say unto it Our word "Be" -and it is.

Wallazeena haajaroo fil laahi mim ba'di maa zulimoo lanubawwi' annahum fiddunyaa hasanatanw wa la ajrul Aakhirati akbar; law kaanoo ya'lamoon

NOW as for those who forsake the domain of evil in the cause of God, after having suffered wrong [on account of their faith] - We shall most certainly grant them a station of good fortune in this world: but their reward in the life to come will be far greater yet. If they [who deny the truth] could but understand

Allazeena sabaroo wa 'alaa Rabbihim yatawak kaloon

those who, having attained to patience in adversity, in their Sustainer place their trust!

Wa maaa arsalnaa min qablika illaa rijaalan nooheee ilaihim; fas'alooo ahlaz zikri in kuntum laa ta'lamoon

AND [even] before thy time, [O Muhammad,] We never sent [as Our apostles] any but [mortal] men, whom We inspired: and if you have not [yet] realized this, ask the followers of [earlier] revelation,"

Bilbaiyinaati waz Zubur; wa anzalnaaa ilaikaz Zikra litubaiyina linnaasi maa nuzzila ilaihim wa la'allahum yatafakkaroon

[and they will tell you that their prophets, too, were but mortal men whom We had endowed] with all evidence of the truth and with books of divine wisdom. And upon thee [too] have We bestowed from on high this reminder, so that thou might make clear unto mankind all that has ever been thus bestowed upon them, and that they might take thought.

Afa aminal lazeena makarus saiyi aati ai yakhsifal laahu bihimul arda aw yaaa tiyahumul 'azaabu min haisu laa yash'uroon

Can, then, they who devise evil schemes ever feel sure that God will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that suffering will not befall them without their perceiving whence [it came]? -

Aw yaakhuzahum fee taqallubihim famaa hum bi mu'jizeen

or that He will not take them to task [suddenly] in the midst of their comings and goings, without their being able to elude [Him],

Aw yaakhuzahum 'alaa takhawwuf; fa inna Rabbakum la Ra'oofur Raheem

or take them to task through slow decay? And yet, behold, your Sustainer is most compassionate, a dispenser of grace!

Awa lam yaraw ilaa maa khalaqal laahu min shai'iny-yatafaiya'u zilaaluhoo 'anil yameeni washshamaaa' ili sujjadal lillaahi wa hum daakhiroon

HAVE, THEN, they [who deny the truth] never considered any of the things that God has created _ (how] their shadows turn right and left, prostrating themselves before God and utterly submissive [to His will]?

Wa lillaahi yasjudu maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ardi min daaabbatinw walma laaa'ikatu wa hum laa yastakbiroon

For, before God prostrates itself all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth - every beast that moves, and the angels: [even] these do not bear themselves with false pride:

yakhaafoona Rabbahum min fawqihim wa yaf'aloona maa yu'maroon

they fear their Sustainer high above them, and do whatever they are bidden to do.

Wa qaalal laahu laa tatta khizooo ilaahainis naini innamaa Huwa Ilaahunw Waahid; fa iyyaaya farhaboon

And God has said: "Do not take to worshipping two [or more] deities. He is the One and Only God: hence, of Me, of Me alone stand in awe!"

Wa lahoo maa fis samaawaati wal ardi wa lahud deenu waasibaa; afaghairal laahi tattaqoon

And His is all that is in the heavens and on earth, and to Him [alone] obedience is always due: will you, then, pay reverence to aught but Him?

Wa maa bikum minni'matin faminal laahi summa izaa massakumud durru fa ilaihi taj'aroon

For, whatever good thing comes to you, comes from God; and whenever harm befalls you, it is unto Him that you cry for help

Summaa izaa kashafad durra 'ankum izaa fareequm minkum bi Rabbihim yushrikoon

yet as soon as He has removed the harm from you, lo! some of you [begin to] ascribe to other powers a share 'in their Sustainer's divinity

Liyakfuroo bimaa aatainaahum; fatamatta'oo, faswfa ta'lamoon

[as if] to prove their ingratitude for all that We have granted them! Enjoy, then, your [brief] life: but in time you will come to know [the truth]!

Wa yaj'aloona limaa laa ya'lamoona naseebam mimmaa razaqnnaahum; tallaahi latus'alunaa 'ammaa kuntum taftaroon

As it is, they ascribe - out of what We provide for them as sustenance - a share unto things of which they know nothing. By God, you shall most certainly be called to account for all your false imagery!

Wa yaj'aloona lillaahil banaati Subhaanahoo wa lahum maa yashtahoon

And [thus, too,] they ascribe daughters unto God, who is limitless in His glory - whereas for themselves [they would choose, if they could, only] what they desire:

Wa izaa bushshira ahaduhum bil unsaa zalla wajhuhoo muswaddanw wa huwa kazeem

for, whenever any of them is given the glad tiding of [the birth of] a girl, his face darkens, and he is filled with suppressed anger,

yatawaaraa minal qawmimin sooo'i maa bushshira bih; a-yumsikuhoo 'alaa hoonin am yadussuhoo fit turaab; alaa saaa'a maa yahkumoon

avoiding all people because of the [alleged] evil of the glad tiding which he has received, [and debating within himself:] Shall he keep this [child] despite the contempt [which he feels for it]-or shall he bury it in the dust? Old, evil indeed is whatever they decide!

Lillazeena laa yu'minoona bil Aakhirati masalus saw'i wa lillaahil masalul a'laa; wa Huwal 'Azeezul Hakeem

[Thus it is that] the attribute of evil applies to all who do not believe in the life to come -whereas unto God applies the attribute of all that is most sublime: for He alone is almighty, truly wise!

Wa law yu'aakhizul laahun naasa bizulminhim maa taraka 'alaihaa min daaabbatinw wa laakiny yu'akhkhiruhum ilaaa ajalim musamman fa izaa jaaa'a ajaluhum laa yastaakhiroona saa'atanw wa laa yastaqdimoon

Now if God were to take men [immediately] to task for all the evil that they do [on earth], He would not leave a single living creature upon its face. However, He grants them respite until a term set [by Him]: but when the end of their term approaches, they can neither delay it by a single moment, nor can they hasten it.

Wa yaj'aloona lillaahi maa yakrahoona wa tasifu alsinatuhumul kaziba anna lahumul husnaa laa jarama anna lahumun Naara wa annahum mufratoon

As it is, they ascribe to God something that they [themselves] dislike -and [all the while] their tongues utter the lie that [by doing so] they earn supreme merit! Truly, they earn but the fire, and will be left out [of God's grace]!

Tallaahi laqad arsalnaaa ilaaa umamim min qablika fazayyana lahumush Shaitaanu a'maalahum fahuwa waliyyuhumul yawma wa lahum 'azaabun aleem

By God, [O Prophet,] even before thy time have We sent apostles unto [various] communities: but [those who were bent on denying the truth have always refused to listen to Our messages because] Satan has made all their own doings seem goodly to them: and he is [as] close to them today [as he was to the sinners of yore]; hence, grievous suffering awaits them.

Wa maaa anzalnaa 'alaikal Kitaaba illaa litubaiyina lahumul lazikh talafoo feehi wa hudanw wa rahmatal liqawminy yu'minoon

And upon thee [too] have We bestowed from on' high this divine writ for no other reason than that thou might make clear unto them all [questions of faith] on which they have come to hold divergent views, and [thus offer] guidance and grace unto people who will believe.

Wallaahu anzala minas samaaa'i maaa'an fa ahyaa bihil arda ba'da mawtihaa; inna fee zaalika la aayatal liqaw miny yasma'oon

AND GOD sends down water from the skies, giving life thereby to the earth after it had been lifeless: in this, behold, there is a message indeed for people who [are willing to] listen.

Wa inna lakum fil an'aami la'ibrah; nusqeekum mimmmaa fee butoonihee mim baini farsinw wa damil labanann khaalisan saaa'ighallish shaaribeen

And, behold, in the cattle [too] there is indeed a lesson for you: We give you to drink of that [fluid] which is [secreted from] within their bellies between that which is to be eliminated [from the animal's body] and [its] life-blood: milk pure and pleasant to those who drink it.

Wa min samaraatin nakheeli wal a'nnaabi tattakhizoona minhu sakaranw wa rizqann hasanaa; inna fee zaalika la Aayatal liqawminy ya'qiloon

And [We grant you nourishment] from the fruit of date-palms and vines: from it you derive intoxicants as well as wholesome sustenance -in this, behold, there is a message indeed for people who use their reason!

Wa awhaa Rabbuka ilannnabli anit takhizee minal jabaali buyootanw wa minash shajari wa mimmaa ya'rishoon

And [consider how] thy Sustainer has inspired the bee: "Prepare for thyself dwellings in mountains and in trees, and in what [men] may build [for thee by way of hives];

Summma kulee min kullis samaraati faslukee subula Rabbiki zululaa; yakhruju mim butoonihaa sharaabum mukh talifun alwaanuhoo feehi shifaaa'ul linnaas, innna fee zaalika la Aayatal liqawminy yatafakkaroon

and then eat of all manner of fruit, and follow humbly the paths ordained for thee by thy Sustainer." [And lo!] there issues from within these [bees] a fluid of many hues, wherein there is health for man. In all this, behold, there is a message indeed for people who think!

Wallaahu khalaqakum suma tatawaffaakum; wa minkum many-yuradu ilaaa arzalil 'umuri likai laa ya'lama ba'da 'ilmin shai'aa; innal laaha 'Aleemun Qadeer

AND GOD has created you, and in time will cause you to die; and many a one of you is reduced in old age to a most abject state, ceasing to know anything of what he once knew so well. Verily, God is all-knowing, infinite in His power!

Wallaahu faddala ba'dakum 'alaa ba'din fir rizq; famal lazeena fuddiloo biraaaddee rizqihim 'alaa maa malakat aimaanuhum fahum feehi sawaaa'; afabini'matil laahi yajhadoon

And on some of you God has bestowed more abundant means of sustenance than on others: and yet, they who are more abundantly favoured are [often] unwilling to share their sustenance with those whom their right hands possess, so that they [all] might be equal in this respect. Will they, then, God's blessings [thus] deny?

Wallaahu ja'ala lakum min anfusikum azwaajanw wa ja'ala lakum min azwaajikum baneena wa hafadatanw wa razaqakum minat yaiyibaat; afabil baatili yu'minoona wa bini'matil laahi hum yakkfuroon

And God has given you mates of your own kinds and has given you, through your mates, children and children's children, and has provided for you sustenance out of the good things of life. Will men, then, [continue to] believe in things false and vain, and thus blaspheme against God's blessings? -

Wa ya'budoona min doonil laahi maa laa yamliku lahum rizqam minas samaawaati wal ardi shai'anw wa laa yastatee'oon

and will they [continue to] worship, instead of God, something that has it not within its power to provide for them any sustenance whatever from the heavens or the earth, and can do nothing at all?

Falaa tadriboo lillaahil amsaal; innal laaha ya'lamu wa antum laa ta'lamoon

Hence, do not coin any similitudes for Gods Verily, God knows [all], whereas you have no [real] knowledge.

Darabal laahu masalan 'abdam mammlookal laa yaqdiru 'alaa shai'inw wa marrazaqnaahu mminnaa rizqan hasanan fahuwa yunfiqu minhu sirranw wa jahra; hal yasta-woon; alhamdu lillaah; bal aksaruhum laa ya'lamoon

God propounds [to you] the parable of [two men-] a man enslaved, unable to do anything of his own accord, and a [free] man upon whom We have bestowed goodly sustenance [as a gift] from Ourselves, so that he can spend thereof [at will, both] secretly and openly. Can these [two] be deemed equal? All praise is due to God [alone]: but most of them do not understand it.

Wa darabal laahu masalar rajulaini ahaduhumaaa abkamu laa yaqdiru 'alaa shai'inw wa huwa kallun 'alaa mawlaahu ainamaa yuwajjihhu laa yaati bikhairin hal yastawee huwa wa many-yaamuru bil'adli wa huwa 'alaa Siraatim MMustaqeem

And God propounds [to you] the parable of two [other] men -one of them dumb, unable to do anything of his own accord, and a sheer burden on his master: to whichever task the latter directs him, he accomplishes no good. Can such a one be considered the equal of [a wise man] who enjoins the doing of what is right and himself follows a straight way?

Wa lillaahi ghaibus samaawaati wal ard; wa maaa amrus Saa'ati illaa kalamhil basari aw huwa aqrab; innal laaha 'alaaa kulli shai'in Qadeer

And, God's [alone] is the knowledge of the hidden reality of the heavens and the earth. And so, the advent of the Last Hour will but manifest itself [in a single moment,] like the twinkling of an eye, or closer still: for, behold, God has the power to will anything.

Wallaahu akhrajakum mim butooni ummahaatikum laa ta'lamoona shai'anw wa ja'ala lakumus sam'a wal absaara wal af'idata la'allakum tashkuroon

And God has brought you forth from your mothers' wombs knowing nothing-but He has endowed you with hearing, and sight, and minds, so that you might have cause to be grateful.

Alam yaraw ilat tairi musakhkharaatin fee jawwis samaaa'i maa yumsikuhunna illal laah; inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil liqawminy yu'minoon

Have, then, they [who deny the truth] never considered the birds, enabled [by God] to fly in mid-air, with none but God holding them aloft? In this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who will believe!

Wallaahu ja'ala lakum min juloodil an'aami buyootan tastakhif foonahaa yawma za'nikum wa yawma iqaamatikum wa min aswaafihaa wa awbaarihaa wa ash'aarihaaa asaasanw wa mataa'an ilaa been

And God has given you [the ability to build] your houses as places of rest, and has endowed you with [the skill to make] dwellings out of the skins of animals - easy for you to handle when you travel and when you camp -and [to make] furnishings and goods for temporary use of their [rough] wool and their soft, furry wool and their hair.

Wallaahu ja'ala lakum mimmaa khalaqa zilaalanw wa ja'ala lakum minal jibaali aknaananw wa ja'ala lakum saraabeela taqeekumul harra wa saraabeela taqeekum baasakum; kazaalika yutimmu ni'matahoo alaikum la'allakum tuslimoon

And among the many objects of His creation, God has appointed for you [various] means of protection: thus, He has given you in the mountains places of shelter, and has endowed you with [the ability to make] garments to protect you from heat [and cold], as well as such garments as might protect you from your [mutual] violence. In this way does He bestow the full measure of His blessings on you, so that you might surrender yourselves unto Him.

Fa in tawallaw fa innamaa 'alaikal balaaghul mubeen

BUT IF they turn away [from thee, O Prophet, remember that] thy only duty is a clear delivery of the message [entrusted to thee].

Ya'rifoona ni'matal laahi summa yunkiroonahaa wa aksaruhumul kaafiroon

They [who turn away from it] are fully aware of God's blessings, but none the less they refuse to acknowledge them [as such], since most of them are given to denying the truth.

Wa yawma nab'asu min kulli ummatin shaheedan summa laa yu'zanu lillazeena kafaroo wa laa hum yusta'taboon

But one Day We shall raise up a witness out of every community, whereupon they who were bent on denying the truth will not be allowed to plead [ignorance], and neither will they be allowed to make amends.

Wa izaa ra al lazeena zalamul 'azaaba falaa yukhaf fafu 'anhum wa laa hum yunzaroon

And when they who were bent on evildoing behold the suffering [that awaits them, they will realize that] it will not be lightened for them [by virtue of their pleading]; and neither will they be granted respite.

Wa izaa ra al lazeena ashrakoo shurakaaa'ahum qaaloo Rabbana haaa'ulaaa'i shurakaaa'unal lazeena kunnaa nad'oo min doonika fa alqaw ilaihimul qawla innakum lakaaziboon

And when they who were wont to ascribe divinity to beings other than God behold [on Judgment Day] those beings to whom they were wont to ascribe a share in His divinity, they will exclaim: "O our Sustainer! These are the beings to whom we ascribed a share in Thy divinity, and whom we were wont to invoke instead of Thee!" -whereupon [those beings] will fling at them the retort: "Behold, you have indeed been lying [to yourselves]!"

Wa alqaw ilal laahi yawma'izinis salama wa dalla 'anhum maa kaanoo yaftaroon

And on that Day will they [who had thus been sinning, belatedly] proffer their surrender to God; and all their false imagery will have forsaken them.

Allazeena kafaroo wa saddoo 'an sabeelil laahi zidnaahum 'azaaban fawqal 'azaabi bimaa kaanoo yufsidoon

Upon all who were bent on denying the truth and who turned others away from the path of God will We heap suffering upon suffering in return for all the corruption that they wrought:

Wa yawma nab'asu fee kulli ummmatin shaheedan 'alaihim min anfusihim wa ji'naa bika shaheedan 'alaa haaa'ulaaa'; wa nazzalnaa 'alaikal Kitaaba tibyaanal likulli shai'inw wa hudanw wa rahmatanw wa bushraa lilmuslimeen

for one Day We shall raise up within every community a witness against them from among themselves. And thee [too, O Prophet,] have We brought forth to bear witness regarding those [whom thy message may have reached], inasmuch as We have bestowed from on high upon thee, step by step, this divine writ, to make everything clear, and to provide guidance and grace and a glad tiding unto all who have surrendered themselves to God.

Innal laaha yaamaru bil 'adli wal ihsaani wa eetaaa'i zil qurbaa wa yanhaa 'anil fahshaaa'i wal munkari walbagh-i' ya'izukum la'allakum tazakkkaroon

BEHOLD, God enjoins justice, and the doing of good, and generosity towards [one's] fellow-men; and He forbids all that is shameful and all that runs counter to reason, as well as envy; [and] He exhorts you [repeatedly] so that you might bear [all this] in mind.

Wa awfoo bi Ahdil laahi izaa 'aahattum wa laa tanqudul aimaana ba'da tawkeedihaa wa qad ja'altumul laaha 'alaikum kafeelaa; innal laaha ya'lamu maa taf'aloon

And be true to your bond with God whenever you bind yourselves by a pledge, and do not break [your] oaths after having [freely] confirmed them and having called upon God to be witness to your good faith: behold, God knows all that you do.

Wa laa takoonoo kallatee naqadat ghazlahaa mim ba'di quwwatin ankaasaa; tattakhizoona aimaanakum dakhlalam bainakum an takoona ummatun hiya arbaa min ummah; innnamaa yablookumul laahu bih; wa la yubaiyinanna lakum yawmal Qiyaamati maa kuntum fee takhtalifoon

Hence, be not like her who breaks and completely untwists the yarn which she [herself] has spun and made strong-[be not like this by] using your oaths as a means of deceiving one another, simply because some of you may be more powerful than others." By all this, God but puts you to a test-and [He does it] so that on Resurrection Day He might make clear unto you all that on which you were wont to differ.

Wa law shaaa'al laahu laja'alakum ummmatanw waahidatanw wa laakiny yudillu many-yashaaa'u wa yahdee many-yashaaa'; wa latus'alunna 'ammaa kuntum ta'maloon

For, had God so willed, He could surely have made you all one single community; however, He lets go astray him that wills [to go astray], and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]; and you will surely be called to account for all that you ever did!

Wa laa tattakhizooo aimaanakum dakhalam bainakum ftazilla qadamum ba'da subootihaa wa tazooqus sooo'a bimmaa sadattum 'an sabeelil laahi wa lakum 'azaabun 'azeem

And do not use your oaths as a means of deceiving one another-or else [your] foot will slip after having been firm, and then you will have to taste the evil [consequences] of your having turned away from the path of God, with tremendous suffering awaiting you [in the life to come].

Wa laa tashtaroo bi 'ahdil laahi samanan qaleelaa; innamaa 'indal laahi huwa khairul lakum in kuntum ta'lamoon

Hence, do not barter away your bond with God for a trifling gain! Verily, that which is with God is by far the best for you, if you but knew it:

maa 'indakum yanfadu wa maa 'indal laahi baaq; wa lanajziyannal lazeena sabarooo ajjrahum bi ahsani maa kaanoo ya'maloon

all that is with you is bound to come to an end, whereas that which is with God is everlasting. And most certainly shall We grant unto those who are patient in adversity their reward in accordance with the best that they ever did.

Man 'amila saaliham min zakarin aw unsaa wa huwa mu'minun falanuhyiyannahoo hayaatan taiiyibatanw wa lanajzi yannnahum ajrahum bi ahsani maa kaanoo ya'maloon

As for anyone - be it man or woman - who does righteous deeds, and is a believer withal - him shall We most certainly cause to live a good life. and most certainly shall We grant unto such as these their reward in accordance with the best that they ever did.

Fa izaa qara tal Quraana fasta'iz billaahi minashh Shai taanir rajeem

NOW whenever thou happen to read this Qur'an, seek refuge with God from Satan, the accursed.

Innahoo laisa lahoo sultaanun 'alal lazeena aamanoo wa 'alaa Rabbihim yatawakkaloon

Behold, he has no power over those who have attained to faith and in their Sustainer place their tray trust:

Innnamaa sultaanuhoo 'alal lazeena yatawallawnahoo wallazeena hum bihee mushrikoon

he has power only over those who are willing to follow him, and who [thus] ascribe to him a share in God's divinity.

Wa izaa baddalnaaa Aayatam makaana Aayatinw wal laahu a'lamu bimaa yunazzilu qaalooo innamaa anta muftar; bal aksaruhum laa ya'lamoon

And now that We replace one message by another -since God is fully aware of what He bestows from on high, step by step - they [who deny the truth] are wont to say, "Thou but inventest it!" Nay, but most of them do not understand it!

Qul nazzalahoo Roohul Qudusi mir Rabbika bilhaqqi liyusabbital lazeena aamanoo wa hudanw wa bushraa lilmuslimeen

Say: "Holy inspiration has brought it down from thy Sustainer by stages, setting forth the truth, so that it might give firmness unto those who have attained to faith, and provide guidance and a glad tiding unto all who have surrendered themselves to God."

Wa laqad na'lamu annahum yaqooloona innamaa yu'allimuhoo bashar; lisaanul lazee yulhidoona ilaihi a'ja miyyunw wa haaza lisaanun 'Arabiyyum mubeen

And, indeed, full well do We know that they say, "It is but a human being that imparts [all] this to him! -[notwithstanding that] the tongue of him to whom they so maliciously point is wholly outlandish, whereas this is Arabic speech, clear [in itself] and clearly showing the truth [of its source].

Innal lazeena laa yu'minoona bi Aayaatil laahi laa yahdehimul laahu wa lahum 'azaabun aleem

Verily, as for those who will not believe in God's messages, God does not guide them aright; and grievous suffering will be their lot [in the life to come].

Innamaa yaftaril kazibal lazeena laa yu'minoona bi Aayaatil laahi wa ulaaa'ika humul kaaziboon

It is but they who will not believe in God's messages that invent this falsehood; and it is they, they who are lying!

man kafara billaahi mim ba'di eemaanihee illaa man ukriha wa qalbuhoo mutmma'innum bil eemaani wa laakim man sharaha bilkufri sadran fa'alaihim ghadabum minal laahi wa lahum 'azaabun 'azeem

As for anyone who denies God after having once attained to faith-and this, to be sure, does not apply to one who does it under duress, the while his heart remains true to his faith, but [only, to] him who willingly opens up his heart to a denial of the truth-: upon all such [falls] God's condemnation, and tremendous suffering awaits them:

Zaalika bi annahumus tahabbul hayaatad dunyaa 'alal Aakhirati wa annal laaha laa yahdil qawmal kaafireen

all this, because they hold this world's life in greater esteem than the life to come, and because God does not bestow His guidance upon people who deny the truth.

Ulaaa'ikal lazeena taba'al laahu 'alaa quloobihim wa sam'ihim wa absaarihim wa ulaaa'ika humul ghaafiloon

They whose hearts and whose hearing and whose sight God has sealed -it is they, they who are heedless!

Laa jarama annnahum fil Aakhirati humul khassiroon

Truly it is they, they who in the life to come shall be the losers!

Summa inna Rabbaka lillazeena haajaroo mim ba'dimaa futinoo summma jaahadoo wa sabaroo inna Rabbaka mim ba'dihaa la Ghafoorur Raheem

And yet, behold, thy Sustainer [grants His forgiveness] unto those who forsake the domain of evil after having succumbed to its temptation, and who thenceforth strive hard [in God's cause] and are patient in adversity: behold, after such [repentance] thy Sustainer is indeed much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace!

Yawma taatee kullu nafsin tujaadilu 'an nafsihaa wa tuwaffaa kullu nafsim maa 'amilat wa hum laa yuzlamoon

[Be conscious, then, of] the Day when every human being shall come to plead for himself [alone], and every human being shall be repaid in full for whatever he has done, and none shall be wronged.

Wa darabal laahu masalan qaryatan kaanat aaminatam mutma'innatany yaaateehaa rizquhaa rghadam min kulli makaanin fakafarat bi an'umil laahi fa azaaqahal laahu libaasal joo'i walkhawfi bimaa kaanoo yasna'oon

AND GOD propounds [to you] a parable: [Imagine] a town which was [once] secure and at ease, with its sustenance coming to it abundantly from all quarters, and which thereupon blasphemously refused to show gratitude for God's blessings: and therefore God caused it to taste the all-embracing misery of hunger and fear in result of all [the evil] that its people had so persistently wrought.

Wa laqad jaaa'ahum Rasoolum minhum fakazzaboohu fa akhazahumul 'azaabu wa hum zaalimoon

And indeed, there had come unto them an apostle from among themselves -but they gave him the lie; and therefore suffering overwhelmed them while they were thus doing wrong [to themselves].

Fakuloo mimmaa razaqa kumul laahu halaalan taiyibanw washkuroo ni'matal laahi in kuntum iyyaahu ta'budoon

AND SO, partake of all the lawful, good things which God has provided for you as sustenance, and render thanks unto God for His blessings, if it is [truly] Him that you worship.

Innamaa harrma 'alai kumul maitata waddama wa lahmal khinzeeri wa maaa uhilla lighairil laahi bihee famanid turra ghaira baaghinw wa laa 'aadin fa innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

He has forbidden to you only carrion, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that over which any name other than God's has been invoked; but if one is driven [to it] by necessity - neither coveting it nor exceeding his immediate need -verily, God is much forgiving, a dispenser of grace.

Wa laa taqooloo limaa tasifu alsinatukumul kaziba haaza halaalunw wa haazaa haraamul litaftaroo 'alal laahil kazib; innal lazeena yaftaroona 'alal laahil kaziba laa yuflihoon

Hence, do not utter falsehoods by letting your tongues determine [at your own discretion], "This is lawful and that is forbidden", thus attributing your own lying inventions to God: for, behold, they who attribute their own lying inventions to God will never attain to a happy state!

Mata'un qaleelunw wa lahum 'azaabun aleem

A brief enjoyment [may be theirs in this world] -but grievous suffering awaits them [in the life to come]!

Wa 'alal lazeena haadoo harramnaa ma qasasnaa 'alaika min qablu wa maa zalamanaahum wa laakin kaanoo anfusahum wa laakin kaanoo anfusahum yazlimoon

And [only] unto those who followed the Jewish faith did We forbid all that We have mentioned to thee ere this; and no wrong did We do to them, but it was they who persistently wronged themselves.

Summma inna Rabbaka lillazeena 'amilus sooo'a bijahaalatin summa taaboo mim ba'di zaaalika wa aslahoo inna Rabbaka mim ba'dihaa la Ghafoorur Raheem

And once again: Behold, thy Sustainer [shows mercy] to those who do evil out of ignorance and afterwards repent and live righteously: behold, after such [repentance] thy Sustainer is indeed much forgiving, a dispenser of grace.

Inna Ibraaheema kaana ummatan qaanital lillaahi Haneefanw wa lam yakuminal mushrikeen

VERILY, Abraham was a man who combined within himself all virtues, devoutly obeying God's will, turning away from all that is false, and not being of those who ascribe divinity to aught beside God:

Shaakiral li an'umih; ijtabaahu wa hadaahu ilaa Siraatim Muustaqeem

[for he was always] grateful for the blessings granted by Him who had elected him and guided him onto a straight way.

Wa aatainaahu fid dunyaa hasanah; wa innahoo fil Aakhirati laminas saaliheen

And so We vouchsafed him good in this world; and, verily, in the life to come [too] he shall find himself among the righteous.

Summma awhainaa ilaika anit tabi' Millata Ibraaheema haneefaa; wa maa kaana minal mushrikeen

And lastly, We have inspired thee, [O Muhammad, with this message:] "Follow the creed of Abraham, who turned away from all that is false, and was not of those who ascribe divinity to aught beside God;

Innnamaa ju'ilas Sabtu 'alal lazeenakhtalafoo feeh; wa inna Rabbaka la yahkumu bainahum Yawmal Qiyaamati feemaa kaanoo feehi yakhtalifoon

[and know that the observance of] the Sabbath was ordained only for those who came to hold divergent views about him; but, verily, God will judge between them on Resurrection Day with regard to all on which they were wont to differ.

Ud'u ilaa sabeeli Rabbika bilhikmati walmaw 'izatil hasanati wa jaadilhum billatee hiya ahsan; inna Rabbaka huwa a'almu biman dalla 'an sabeelihee wa Huwa a'lamu bilmuhtadeen

CALL THOU (all mankind] unto thy Sustainer's path with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the most kindly manner- for, behold, thy Sustainer knows best as to who strays from His path, and best knows He as to who are the right-guided.

Wa in 'aaqabtum fa'aaqiboo bimisli maa 'ooqibtum bihee wa la'in sabartum lahuwa khairul lissaabireen

Hence, if you have to respond to an attack (in argument], respond only to the extent of the attack levelled against you; but to bear yourselves with patience is indeed far better for (you, since God is with] those who are patient in adversity.

Wasbir wa maa sabruka illaa billaah; wa laa tahzan 'alaihim wa laa taku fee daiqim mimmaa yamkuroon

Endure, then, with patience (all that they who deny the truth may say] -always remembering that it is none but God who gives thee the strength to endure adversity -and do not grieve over them, and neither be distressed by the false arguments which they devise:

Innal laaha ma'al lazeenat taqaw wal lazeena hum muhsinoon

for, verily, God is with those who are conscious of Him and are doers of good withal!
